I’m Mike Stringer. I live with my family in Chicago.

I work as a designer and data scientist at IDEO. We’re using data, algorithms, and the skills and tools of data science not for science but for design; not for figuring out how things are, but for shaping things into something better. That mindset frames how we approach “data science”, and we’re optimistic it also improves the results of our work.

I joined IDEO through the acquisition of Datascope, which I co-founded with my friend Dean Malmgren in 2009 and grew with the help of Aaron Wolf, Irmak Sirer, Bo Peng, Brian Lange, and many others.

Before that, I researched complex systems in Luis Amaral’s group at Northwestern, and computational social science with Brian Uzzi at the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems.
